A Summary of Max Schulman's "Love Is a Fallacy"

The story "Love is a fallacy" is about an intelligent guy who had a friend named Petey who was the opposite of him.Petey was a very dumb guy not like him.The intelligent guy likes a lady named Polly who Petey also admires. So he used his intelligende over Petey. That time racoon coats were popular,so he had a deal with Petey. He made him choose between the racoon coat or Polly.Being a dumb guy,he chose the racon coat.So the intellegent guy seized his chance. He then did some actions to be closer to Polly.Polly was a very beautiful lady but a very stupid one too.So he did everything to make her a perfect partner for him.He asks her out to teeach her about fallacies. He explained to her all the types of fallacies. And with his patience,he had succeeded on making her knowledgeable about fallacies.

He then decided to express his feelings towards her but each time he tries to,Polly can spot a right fallacy for it.She kept on using the fallacies in every sentence he gives in expressing his love.In the end,Polly admitted that she can't be his girl because she has already said yes to someone. To Petey!!And just because of one reason, because Petey has a racoon coat.

Reaction to Max Schulman's "LOve is a Fallacy"

The story a "Love is a fallacy" was nice.It was very funny that the girl was already as clever as the guy in the end.Well, that story implied that patience is truly a virtue. Why?Because if Mr. Intelligent didn't have patience in teaching Polly(his love),she wouldn't have been knowledgeable about fallacies and she could have remained her stupidity. It was very unfair in Mr.Intelligent's side because he still didn't get what he wanted.I find Mr. Intelligent very confident about himself and always underestimated his friend Petey which I can't blame him.Petey is such a certified idiot,as in!!But even with his stupidity,he still won in the end because he was the one who got Polly and not Mr.Intelligent.Wonder why??Because,Mr.Intelligent doesn't have a racoon coat
Imagine, just because of this racoon coat,Petey exchanged his love for Polly!!It was also very funny that Polly chose Petey, who was very dumb than Mr.Intelligent who is,obviously, intelligent. In the story, the fallacies were defined and explained well. The story was well-structured.I also felt very sorry for Mr.Intelligent because he did not get Polly. He really tried hard to make Polly a model partner in life but maybe they were really not meant to be but nevertheless,it was not his lost.It was shown in the story too, that however dumb you are,you will not stay as an idiot forever if you just try to put something in your head.
You can really identify or define the characters in the way they are shown in the story.Mr.Intelligent started by making his friend,Petey, choose between Polly or his racoon coat.He was confident that Petey will choose the racoon coat because of his being stupid. In the end,Mr.Intelligent realizes that he made a mistake. But well, his mistake has done good to others.Just like what happened to his friend,Petey,he already has a racoon coat,he also has the girl he likes. And Polly too, because of Mr.Intelligent's teaching, she became intelligent and cleverer than him.
One lesson for Mr.Intelligent is that he must not take advantage of the people who he knew are defenseless(just like Petey)and that he must not be that confident about himself just because he is intelligent.Polly should also be thankful to Mr.Intelligent and Petey should also keep his deal with Mr.Intelligent.
The ending of the story was nice.It had a hanging ending.I liked the author's style of ending the story. It was not like the ending of other stories.Though Polly was already intelligent, she remained like a stupid person becuse she just uses her knowledge literally without thinking. And because of this, she missed the right person to be with who was Mr.Intelligent.Well,Polly and Petey were a perfect combination, imagine, idiot plus stupid, what could the result be??

My Bus Fuss!!

Though it might be quite surprisingly ironic to widely humiliate yourself in front of everybody by telling them your embarrassing moments, that is what I would likely do now. I have many humiliating experiences in jeepneys(and when I say humiliating, I swear it truly is), just like hitting your head in the upper part of the jeepney or when you suddenly slip while stepping out from a vehicle. These experiences are just minor humiliations that I've experienced. But this one I'm going to share to you is somehow different. It is still undeniably humiliating but it's different. Why? Because it didn't happen in a jeepney, it happened in a bus..

I was still in first year that time it happened. I have stayed late in school so when a I went to North Bus Terminal, the sky was already gloomy. I rode on a bus and I was sitting near the window so as to feel the cool breeze of the night. The bus wasn't full yet so I got bored waiting. I didn't notice that I fell asleep which was very unfortunate considering what would happen next. I had no idea that the bus was already running because I was out there in the middle of my dreams. Just then, I suddenly woke up, looked out into the window and I didn't know what got into me that I quickly, shamelessly shouted, "Lugar lang!!Lugar lang!!". Of course with my perfect articulation and my booming voice, I've perfectly got the other passengers attention. And to my utmost horror, I realized that I was not yet in Danao, I was still in Consolacion!!So I then abruptly said not to stop the bus. Luckily, the driver and the conductor of the bus didn't hear me shouting because there were many people standing in the bus. The only thing left for me to bear was the interminable stares of the people around me. Maybe, they were confused or they were thinking that I was out of my mind which wouldn't surprise me at all considering how foolish I looked like that moment. I just dropped dead and bowed my head. It was such a shame!! Then suddenly,a girl asked me if where do I really stop. It took a great toll for me to say Danao thinking that I was shouting "stop" even if we were still in Consolacion. And to think, Consolacion is absolutely very far from Danao!!Deciding that it was kind of futile to lie to her, I told her that I was going to Danao and not in Consolacion but she kept on telling the people that maybe I was just shy to stop the bus because of my "show" and that I really was about to stop in Consolacion. That girl really disturbingly annoyed me and had I not controlled myself that time, I would have grabbed her hair and told her to shut up which was very unappropriate taking into account her concern for me!! Because of my irritation to that girl, I didn't notice again that I fell asleep. But this time, I made sure I'm not freaking out again. When the bus was already in Danao, I was determined not to make a fool of myself again So I then said again the magic words "lugar lang"lugar lang!!" in the right place and in the right time already. Though when I stepped down in the bus, I heard someone laughed and I saw someone re-enacted what I did there. I can't blame them,it was such a show.Such an incredibly unbearable show!!

That experience greatly placed a mark on me which made me have second thoughts on riding a bus from the North Bus Terminal.Until now, I'm afraid that some people might still remember me as the girl saying the magic words,"Lugar lang!!Lugar lang!!.

The King and I...

If you’re thinking that the meaning of the “king” in the title is a male monarch or someone who wears a crown, then you got me wrong. What I meant about it was a piece in in whose defense is played.Yeah, this entry of mine is about my experience in chess tournament.

It was summer that time and I was still in grade four.I was chosen to be a player of a sports fest event in Danao (my city).I was going to compete with the other players from different schools in Danao. It was held in the plaza because that time, there was still no place to hold the chess tournament not like now, we already have a building just for chess tournament event. As I watch my opponents,I can’t control the sweating of my hands. When I asked them on what grade they were in, some answered grade six and grade five which made my hands more sweaty. It was a round robin game, meaning all of us have the chance to compete with each other. The game started and I already have four wins and two loses. It was my last game because we are just seven competitors. This last game was in favor to me at first but then because of my carelessness, my queen was eaten! That really distracted me in my concentration and I just realized that one by one, my chess pieces were getting eaten by my opponent’s pieces.Until, the last piece left was my precious king. The only pieces that were also left in her is her castle and her king which is favorable to her.I thought that I was going to lose already but luckily,I realized that my opponent doesn’t know how to checkmate me using a king and a castle. So even if my chances of winning the game was 0%, I still continue on moving my king.My opponent’s moves were being counted because there’s a limitation of moves when you are going to checkmate the king which is the only piece left in the game. She continued moving her king to the wrong direction and I continued moving my king away from her king and towards her castle. We just continued doing that until the maximum moves to checkmate me ended.Though she really was in favor of winning the game, it was considered a “draw” or equal.I ranked 2nd with four points and a half, the one half was my score on that “draw” game. The first placer was up by one half point! Her score was five! I was really disappointed for not winning the last game, I could have gotten the chance of winning the first place. But I am still happy being the second placer in the game.During my last game, I really felt a connection between me and my king. I don’t know why but that time, I just kept on telling myself that there was still a chance as long as my king is alive. And I was right! Even though I did not win the game, I still didn’t lose.

So that’s my experience of being a chess player when I was a in elementary. You, do you have any experience in sports during your elementary years??

Sibling Rivalry...

Do you have a sister or a brother? If you do,you can really relate to this entry of mine. It's about sibling rivalry.

Sibling rivalry are very common to almost all families.Sibling rivalry happens when a sister vs. sister, brother vs. brother, or brother vs. sister occurs.Well,we must understand that children's minds are not broad yet to understand all the things that they must understand. One of the common cause of sibling rivalry is when a child senses favoratism in the family.Ever experienced going out with friends and coming home late? Then you are welcomed by your parents by scolding because you passed your curfew time. And then, this sister or brother of yours comes home from a not so important trip and passes his or her curfew time but does not get a scold from your parents.Orwhen you forgot to do your intended chores at home and as punishment, you are grounded and banned to use your cell. While your sister or brother also forgot his or her chores but your parents will just say,"Pasagdii nalang gani".Another example is when you and your younger sibling made a mistake and even though the two of you made the mistake, you always get the blame and your parents a reason is that you should be responsible to your sibling being the older one.Have you experienced too, when everytime you change the channel in your television, your parents scold you but whenever your other brother or sister, they just let them change the channel. These really are the common causes of sibling rivalry, aren't they?Well, another cause of sibling rivalry is when other people compare you from your brother or sister.Just like whe your sibling is good in Math and English and you are just good in basketball or badminton.People may compare you and may say that you must follow your sibling who is academically good and that you must not just focus in your abilities in sports. It may sound so bias but some really experience this unequality of treatment. For me there are some ways to solve this sibling rivalry.First you must know the reason why your parents are stricter in you than your sibling or maybe you are just imagining that they are stricter in you than your other sibling. You must tell them your hurtings by the inequality of treatment they show to you.You must also understand whatever reasons they may give you because sometimes,we misunderstand their actions.Maybe one of the reason why they treat you like that is because you have done something that disappointed them or something that broke their trust on you.You must let them understand that you didn't mean to do those things which broke their trust on you.One solution to stop the comparison between you and your sibling is that when people will ask you, what you are good at,tell them what your abilities are but also tell them the abilities of your sibling.Just like if you tell them,"I'm good in basketball or badminton while my other sibling is good in English and Math".That way, they will know that you and your sibling are not competing against each other and that you two accept that each can have an ability which is either present or absent in you.

We must remember that sibling rivalry is just normal to all families. You just have to make sure that you don't hold a grudge to anyone of your sibling. You must understand them so that they will also understand you.

I'm happy to be here...

When I was still in elementary,Ive always heard of UP.People sometimes say positive and negative opinions in this school.I always thought that time that UP was just in Manila because I can only hear it in TV Patrol and knowing that TV Patrol was located in Manila,I assumed that UP was located there too.But when I was already knowledgeable about UP,I've always wanted to study there. The school they said to be the best in the country.

Well,I started wanting to study in UP when I was just in grade six.Me and my friends were just sharing about the schools that we would like to go to.Up really didn't come in my mind that time.I was just contented on studying in a school located in Danao,my city. But when our teacher asked us where we were going to study if we are already in high school, she suggested many popular schools .She first mentioned UP.She talks highly of it.She said that UP was the best school to go to in Cebu. That time,we were persuaded with all the praisings of our teacher about UP.There then,I started to make UP one of my chosen schools to go to.Luckily, one of our teachers in our school has a daughter who is studying in UP,she was the one who gave me and my classmates forms needed for the HSAT examination in UP.But before I have taken the exam in UP,I have already taken the exam in Science High which is also a popular school in Cebu City. But the result of the exam discouraged me to take the exam in UP.I was just one of the wait-listed students in Science High.It was so disappointing to me.When my teacher heard about it,she just told me to continue taking the exam in UP and that I must not lose hope.Even though I was still not convinced, what she said lightened me up a bit. Finally,I decided to take the examination in UP.It was really a coincidence that the interview for the wait-listed students in Science High to have a higher ranking and the HSAT exam in UP are on the same time and date. So,I have to choose whether to take the interview or to take the exam.I don't know what came into my mind but I chose UP than Science High. And I made the right decision! When the result in the exam in UP came out,my father was very happy to say that I passed and not only that,I ranked 5th place! It was such a blessing from God.

And now,I am studying in UP,surpassing all the pressures and stress. But I have no regrets why I chose UP for I know,it will make me a better person,a more knowledgeable one.I'm happy to be here, the school they said to be the best in the country.

Know Your School Day..

Surely, most of us have experienced being in school. Most have experienced being scolded or praised by teachers. Most of us have experienced having late arrivals and tardy marks.Maybe, most schools have KYSD too.Do you know what it means?

Well, KYSD means "Know Your School Day".It's one week of learning and teaching. The only difference is that, the teachers are not the one teaching the students, instead,a student will teach his or her fellow students.Get it?Well,in this particular week, students apply for a subject to teach,it can be English,Filipino and many more. These students are going to be responsible if the students don't get what they are teaching. You get it now? So,I'll get to my main subject now.The UP high school had their KYSD last February.Being a UP student,I experienced being taught by a student.Well,it was fine but sometimes, the students assigned to a particular subject can't explain their lessons well or sometimes do not discuss the topic well.Sometimes too, they will just make a test without even knowing that the students did not understand what they were talking about.Sometimes too, students being taught are shy to say that they did not understand the topic.Maybe because the teacher(student) is their friend and they don't want to offend him or her.But the main responsibility if a students doesn't learn anything goes to the student acting as the teacher. They must be ready to explain anything because they have the guts to apply for that particular subject.Well, for me,it is much, much better if a real teacher teaches you.Of course, because teachers are already weel experienced and they are used to teach people already. If you compare a student and a teacher, there is a really big gap between their abilities in teaching. But sometimes,it's also nice if your classmate teaches you because you can get along with him or her.Not like in a real teacher, sometimes you can't be yourself fearing that he or she might think that you do not respect him or her.Being taught by a student too is more comfortable because you can treat him or her as a friend.Even though we say that our teachers are our friends too,you can't deny that there is still a wall which separates us from them.During that KYSD,the students ability to teach is tested. And the cooperation of students being taught is tested too. It's just a matter of cooperation for a student to successfully teach his or her students. And it's just a matter of understanding for the students to successfully learn from her fellow student.

That's all I can share to you.KYSD is really a good practice for students to boost their confidence and practice their skills in teaching.Students also have to have the knowledge of that particular subject he or she hopes to teach. We must also be proud and follow those students who want to share their abilities and knowledge to their fellow students. Are you one of them?

I LOVE YOU!!!

What I’m about to share to you this time isn’t about anime or any interesting experience of mine. I’m going to share to you now a more important thing for me than those anime or experiences of mine. I want you to know them, the people who make my stay in U.P bearable and fun inspite of all the pressure and stress. My friends

First, I want to introduce to you to my serious type friend, as what others describe her. She is Gilphanie. Honestly, when we were still in 1st year, I also find her very serious and very intelligent. We were not that close yet. But now in our 2nd year in U.P we are close friends already and I’ve discovered her true identity. She was a clown too like me. Not the clown you see in a circus but someone who can make others laugh. I never thought that she has a very high sense of humor. Well, one of the things that we get along is about anime. She is such an anime fanatic!

Next in line is my silent type friend. She is Grechelle. At first I really thought that she was snobbish and we can’t get along well but I saw her true color. She is also funny and we have many things in common. I really like her straight hair and I’m still hoping that I can have a straight hair like hers someday. She is also good in mathematics. I really like teasing her “RANJIE” even though she doesn’t like him.

My other friend is also my intelligent, silent type friend. She is Josephine. Well, she has already exposed her intelligence since we were 1st year. She is a consistent honor student and I bet she will stil be until we are 4th year students. If you just watch her you will say that she is really a quiet girl but once you get to know her better, you will really see the other side of her. She is really funny and sometimes childish, maybe because she has skipped a year which meant that she is supposed to be a 1st year student now. Well, just imagine, if she is a year younger than us, she still manages to be one of the brightest students in our batch.

Know my noisy, intelligent type of friend. Her name is Mary Jale. When we were still in 1st year, I really find her weird because she can’t stop her tears from flowing whenever she performs or talks in front of a large crowd. We were not that close too that time but now we are not just close, we are also open. Do you get it? What I mean is that we are not just close friends but we are also open to each other. She is also a very intelligent student and is also a consistent honor student since we were 1st year.

And lastly, my childish type of friend. She is Briggite. If you judge her by her movements or by the way she talks to you, you can really say that she is childish. But you can’t underestimate this childish girl because she has a really high I.Q level. She is really intelligent. Of course, she is a consistent honor student too. We really get along with each other and she is really funny.

So that’s all I can say about my friends. I hope you also have people to make your sad days a funnier one. Well I’m lucky to say, I got them

A FLOATING LIBRARY

Have you ever gone to a library? Surely, all of us have already visited a library. Me, I have gone to a library in our school. A library is a place where you can see a collection of books .But what I’m about to share to you now isn’t just a common library. It’s a floating library!!

What comes to your mind upon hearing the phrase “a floating library”? Do you picture out books floating in the water? Books floating in the sea? Well, the latter one may be nearer on my real meaning in the phrase “a floating library”. What I meant was a library in a big ship. It was my first time to visit a library in a ship. Well, maybe, my other classmates too were first timers to see a library in a ship. The name of the ship is M.V Doulos, sounds familiar? Well, the UP High School Cebu decided to have a tour in M.V Doulos knowing that students don’t have to pay the entrance fee and the teachers that will accompany us (the students) will just pay a small amount worth ten pesos only. It was such a great idea for the UP students. The tour was on Thursday and Friday. The first year and second year students(including me) had their tour on Thursday while the third and fourth year student had their tour on Friday. Being one of the second year students so I have gone to M.V Doulos that Thursday. It was really a big ship. It’s crew is composed of mixed nationalities. We first formed a very long line before we have aboarded the ship. When we aboarded the ship, we then went to the library. There are so many kinds of books there, books for children, for cooking, for students, for everyone! We really had fun reading short fairy tales there with my friends. There were a lot of books there that were really interesting to read just like what I saw. It was entitled “How to study well”. Well, that book is really important for us, students, not only UP students but also the other students in other schools. We have to admit that we really need to know how to study well, don’t we? I just realize that those books can greatly help everyone who goes there. Me and my friends decided to go out of the library to watch other places in the ship. We didn’t know that once you get out of the library, you can’t go in there again because the entrance way of the library is in the other side of the boat and the only way you can go there again is if you go out of the ship and go in again in the very entrance stairs to aboard the ship. So we just decided to stay in where we were even though it was boring there. You have no nice scenery there that you can see. Luckily, my classmate Brigitte decided to buy an ice cream worth thirty pesos! And she bought us ice creams too (such a true friend). We spent our time eating the delicious ice cream there.

It was such a nice experience there. I really had fun and I’ve seen a lot of nice books there. Hope you have gone there too. That’s all, have a nice day!!

KINGDOM ANIMANIA!!!!

Anime fever is really, really contagious! Nowadays, many people, may they be adults or children, have an interest over anime. Especially the kids, they really appreciate the beauty of anime characters. But what does anime really have for us to like it?

Some people may not like anime because they think that it is just for kids. Some may say that anime characters are ugly and very fictitious. But why do some people get head over heels on anime? There are many reasons for us to like anime. One of the reasons is that watching anime has no age requirement or age limit. Adults, teens, or kids can freely watch it. Everyone can enjoy it. Anime can also bring enjoyment and laughter to our lonely days or stressful weeks. If you watch it, you will forget some of your problems and you might just find solutions to them once your mind is cleared up from your problems. Adults watching anime can reminisce their childhood memories and they can feel the feeling of being a child again. They can feel again what they felt when they were still kids too. Kids also feel the fun and enjoyment while watching it. They can feel the fun of being a kid in their lives. They can also learn values from it because some anime’s have stories about friendship, family, love, loyalty and many more. While watching it, you can break the wall which separates reality from your imagination. You can see things that you didn’t expect to see in your wildest imagination. You can also relate to some other anime movies.Anime characters, sometimes reflect your attitude, if you are a funny type, a serious type or whatever type your character may be, that’s why you enjoy watching it. You enjoy watching the anime characters do things which you know are not possible in real world. In anime world, there are no limitations in whatever you want to do, everything is possible. In anime, character’s faces can turn as red as an apple or its body can quickly melt and many more things that you can’t see in other movies. Anime are sometimes based on reality too, like those Filipino movies we see on television. The only difference is that the characters in anime are drawn while in Filipino movies characters are real people. Sometimes, anime movies have more interesting stories too than other Filipino movies. Anime movies are flexible too. They can give you comedy, romance, action, horror, suspense or even all of that in one pack, that’s why it can give you whatever you want.

Some people may find thousands of reasons why they don’t like anime but others (including me) also have thousands of reasons why they are anime lovers. Everyone is unique and we have different opinions on some things. We just have to respect each other and accept what each one of us likes and doesn’t like. That’s all hope you liked it. Say all you want but for me, ANIME RULES!!!
